What drummers most influence your style
« on: January 26, 2007, 02:01:38 PM »
Hey everybody. I was on myspace and I was checking out some of my favorite drummers profiles. Calvin Rodgers and Gerald Heyward, Aaron Spears and those guys, and I noticed how they give credit to their favorite drummers. Then while checking out some of their material, and I noticed that you can hear alot of their favorite drummers within their playing styles. Like Calvin Rodgers for instance you can hear alot of Vinnie C. in his playing. Personaly my mentor told me to become a sponge in the drum industry. Soak up as much of everybody you hear as you can, and try to mold what you get to fit in with what else you play.

In saying that I was wondering what drummers do you think most influence your playing style, and in what areas...

For me I'd have to say:

1. Dave Weckl - Pockett
2. Spanky - Modern Technique
3. Bernard "Pretty" Purdie - Old School, ghost notes, and funk grooves

...I personally can't say that I have a certain drummer that influences my style.  My influences come from just listening to many drummers and musicians and trying to let the music that they are playing influence my style if that makes sense. I try to listen to drummers that aren't known to the "masses" because those guys are playing real honest music.  Anyway, the guys that I'm listening to and are influencing my style now are:

Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, Robby Ameen, Dafnis Prieto, Terry Baker, Marvin McQuitty, Ignacio Berroa, Curtis Bernhard (bigblackdrummer), Nathaniel Townsley Jr., Jeremy Haynes, Dave Weckl, Steve Smith, Omar Hakim, Dennis Chambers, Alvaro Lopez.

...these guys are all very musical and are serious about making music.

I'm a personal fan of this drummer names Tank who plays w/Jamareo Artis (Bassist from Omarion, Alicia Keys, etc.). Tank is an awfully amazing drummer who also I think plays with Damon Little from time to time but he is getting ready to blow up to the main circuit just like Jamareo, just watch.

I'm going old school on yall.

1. The Late Yogi Horton(Luther Vandross)-He showed me how to play with power.
2. The Late Jeff Pocarro(Toto)-He showed me how to play with finesse.
3. Clyde Stubblefield(James Brown)-He showed me how to get funky.
4. Dennis Chambers-He showed me how to play the funk with power and finesse and how to get jazzy too.
5. Sheila E.- She showed me a way to play with speed and flair that I had never seen before.
6. John "J.R." Robinson-What can I say, he's a groove master.
7. Abe Foley(Guy, Najee, D'Angelo, Chico DeBarge)-He showed me pure power and about placing accents in the craziest of places.
8. Dave Weckl-I love his work.  What more can I say?
9. Zoro(New Edition, Bobby Brown, Lenny Kravitz)-Molded my foot
10. Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett(The Jacksons, Cameo, Madonna, Janet Jackson)-Also molded my foot.

Hopefully, my listing of some of these artists will cause no controversy in here.  I just wanted to recognize who the drummers played for and how I became familiar with them.
When you've done your very best, do even better.

...nice list doc'.  It's a proven fact that bass players just want drummers to hold that groove or pocket until its there turn to turn up the heat.  Grooveology 101 by BigFoot.

Chris Andoh my mentor .... Instilled in me that all things are possible.
Omar hakim ..... saw him drum on a tV show called Rock School , which made "say i wanna do that too"
Dennis Chambers ... When I needed inspiration after i had run out of ideas and "plateaued"
J Haynes .... For his control over the kit. never knew you could make a drumeset sing. now that is anointing.
Calvin Rogders .....  I love studying this Kat, seems to be on top of his game
Repetition deepens Impression
