Praise & Worship Trouble
« on: January 23, 2007, 08:35:12 PM »
Hi everyone. I know I haven't posted in so long, but it's been because of college. Anyway, I'm having trouble with the formation of our praise team at my church. As I had been seeking God about people to put on the praise team, God didn't lead me to put one of the church's best singers on the praise team. I personally believe that Praise Team is a special ministry in the church and everyone should not be on the praise team. The person who I didn't invite on praise team has bad demeanor and I feel like would cause drama in the praise team.

Currently I run 5 choirs in my church and this is the 6th organization, musically speaking, that I'm in charge of and I want some peace somewhere. Me not inviting the "best" singer in our church has caused so much controversy because people in my church think that it is all about how good you can sing when I try to tell them that leading peole in the presence of God is not about how well you can sing.

What's some advice you all have on this?

Stand your ground. If God is for you, who can be against you?  ;)

Hi,
You are right, Praise and Worship is not about who has the best voice but who can usher in the spirit.  I have witness at my church the person with the worst voice appears to be more sincere about their worship. See they are not concerned with doing runs and hitting high notes but rather giving their all to the Lord.  Stay strong and continue to pray and God will lead you to that peace.

If you don't think that God wants you to allow this person to be in the worship team then don't do it. You don't want the best musicians, you want the people that God wants. People who can lead worship and help to bring in the spirit and soften hearts. It's not about having the best band/choir, it's about having the people that God has chosen.

The question is what kind of quality that you want... Whether you want a good singing group of hell raisers or a modest singing group of worshippers who's prayer life consists of more than just grace before they eat.

When I started at the church I'm at now, the first thing I did was shut down the praise team that they had b/c almost EVERYONE in the choir was on the praise team with the exception of maybe 4 people. I told the choir that we would have praise and worship classes 30 minutes before rehearsal. If they wanted to be eligible to participate on the Praise and Worship team they needed to attend my classes.

Only a few people attended my classes including great singers so those few people became members of my praise team. The people that excluded themselves had no ground to complain or say I was unfair. They saw that the praise team was going to have to have a different level of committment to God and the ministry and THEY chose not to continue.

To God be the glory because I haven't had ONE problem out of them and I've been at the same church for 18 months now...

Hello there, this is my first time in responding to any topic for discussion.  I must say that you have made a good point in making sure that the people that are preparing for the spirit of God to enter into worship are not just singers but understand their place in worship.  I too, am having to revamp my prasie and worship which was lead by my Pastor to not only get the involvement of the congregation but to allow people to experience the  spirit of God by using the gifts and talents that they may not tap into if the venue was not offer to them.  Since you have talked with God and he revealed to you what you need then follow God direction and allow him to open the hearts of those that have not understood His Word.  Keep up the blessed work in you.
