Is it just me??

New Years Service....is it just me, or do any other church organist feel pressured or intimidated by "Watch Service"? I only say this because it seems the members are looking to go "just a little higher" (higher than they did Sunday morning) and I feel like they're looking right at me for that boost. I know it's my job to provide the music, but they have me sweatin up there. Any comments or experiences would be appreciated.

What's up fellow musician!!!   You made a very good point.  People do tend to depend on the musician to "get their praise on".  Sometimes they depend on us so much that church is not church without the music.  Being a musician I can somewhat agree, but the absence of music should not hinder your praise to God.  People should come together to praise  God with/without music.  At the same time we as musicians, and singers are responsible to God for creating (with music/singing) an atmosphere for Him (God) to move in.  Read the story of Saul and David.

......You make a good point, sometimes you will find that a church depends on musicians a lot more than they should. Music is a powerful tool and can usher in the presence and atmosphere of God.

Hello all, I appreciate all the feedback. Watch service went pretty good until someone thought the congregation was still too dead and wanted me to play something to liven them up. We just finished praise and worship (which can be exhausting if you have to sing and play), and thought we were going into the word, and then......."come on play something they're not there yet".....???????
Then I had to open my mouth and let the people know what I thought about needing so much music to praise and worship God, and now I gotta have a "meeting". So pray for me, it's tonight before midweek service.

Too many people come to church waitin for the preacher to preach them happy, or for the choir to sing them happy.  They are missing the point that they are there to commune with The Lord.  We as musicians can set the mood but they gotta praise Him themselves.

I feel u on this one my brother.  I think all musicians and churches have to deal with this one.  Christian/Church ppl are so hard to please especially when the music is not right.  If the right drummer is not on the set, the keyboard/organ player is not hitting the right chords, or the praise team is not singing their favorite song(s).  It is really ridiculous and sad, but it's going on.  Now, at my church, the ministers and the praise team always tell the congregation that music is good and all but we need to learn how to worship without it.  And we have learned how to do this over the years.  They will tell us and visiting musicians when we have fellowships in a minute "to kill the music and let's worship without it".  I love it sometimes because it allows us musician's to worship God in the service more freely like the congregation.

I agree with this effective and eloquent solution to this situation. I have never tried this with visiting churches and their musicians; I just try to keep playing and singing and praying and all the while I am hoping that their spirit will get into the praise realm. I guess you could say I am afraid of their response. But I will try this suggestion.

That is a good idea if it wil work at your church.  I like what everyone said, however, I feel somewhat guilty of thier addiction on because I get a kick out of eggin' em on during service.  As soon as they calm down, sometimes I hit that high key.... and it's over.  I'm  sorry.  I'll own up to it.  But I love to see people praise God.
