Is it better to play standing up or sitting down?
« on: December 19, 2006, 10:11:35 PM »
For now I play standing up. That's because I play in a 61-note keyboard and I really can't play piano like I want to. I'm planning on buying the yamaha s90es later on, which is a 88-note keyboard. I have noticed that when I play sitting down I can do play my scales with more accuracy and technique and my wrist doesn't hurt as much.

I forgot to ask this question:

Do you play standing up or sitting down? Why?

Thanks.

I play sitting and I like the keyboard to be at the same level as sitting at a piano. Anything else bothers my wrists. You shouldnt be playing with your wrists bent unless you are trying to get injured or something. ;D

Yeah! :D

I'll probably start playing sitting down next year.

I play sitting down. I don't like standing and playing.

One advantage to standing up, is that it allows you--at least for me--to move around more.  Especially if you're playing for an audience and trying to get them hyped up.

I can see from your picture if thats you that your wrists should hurt your  forearms are inclined upwards which puts a strain on your hands and joints  that if you practiced as long as i used to you would develop problems

regardless if you stand or sit your wrists should be level with your fore arms in other words the fore arms should be parralell to the ground  and your hands slightly rounded
this is very important

the standing or sitting isnt as big of a deal as is the postion of your arms

get a book called plaidy and they go through extensive talks about proper body alignment

to answer your question I sit because usually at my church services i will sit so i practice the way i will have to play.  and  although not classically trained i study classical and jazz and classical and jazz muixicians traditionally sit.  when was the last time you saw someone stand up playing a grand piano

when you get really serious and are practicing for four or more hours a day you will be glad that you learned a little about proper body alignment

To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word

Sometimes I'm in service at the keyboard for like 1 to 1.5 hours so standing definately isn't an option!!!

I have this problem with my wrist. I think its because of the fold-up metal chair. The chief and I have thinking about buying office chairs to sit in. That way we could be more level with the keyboard.

i dont know about that
when you lift your forearkms your wrist should be so supple that your finger tips stay in contact with the keys until your arm finally pulls them away

if your forearms are level with the board then you will not develop problems with your hands being bent

or do you mean bent backwards like your knuckles pointing up then i agree that is bad

Something about a 45 to 90 degree angle up or down feels funny. Some musicians have the bench real low or standing up while the keyboard is low. Thats why I shake my wrists out now and I stretch them. Carpal tunnel runs in the family. I just shook out this cyst that was in my right wrist. LOL I had one on my LH but it went away years ago. Then I have had one on my RH for over 2 years. I shook my hand real hard now its gone.  :D I can play like the great classical players now. ;D Dont try that at home kids.

Yeah you can move more, but you really can't play like you have to.

For keeping the audience hyped up that should be the P&W leaders job, don't you think? ;)

Unless your the P&W leader then it's ok. :D

The reason I'm like that in the picture is because the music school didn't have keyboard stands so we had to use the table. That's why the keyboard was all the way up to my chest.

Yep I am learning proper body alignment now that I'm going to a more higher level music school. We even had a test on it. So I know I'm getting better.

Don't get office chairs please. Get one of these:

These work way better than office chairs, but I guess you want to be really comfortable. :D

I don't know derik..Me personally, sometimes I like to lean back and rest while I'm not playing. With one of those chairs I can't do that. :) Reminds me, one time we did get a keyboard player to come to our church and play and we knew he sometimes fell asleep or something. So we gave him a stool type chair with no back on it. So he couldn't just simply lean back and fall asleep, but if he still would have fallin asleep he would have hit the floor!!! :o

I think he may have meant my picture.  But that's not me in the picture.  It's P.J. Morgan.

I play standing during our services.  I had never really played standing (for long periods of time) until I became MOM at my church.  Our church platform is decent size, but with all the equipment we have on it, it makes things cramped, so the keys are for standing room only.  However I long for the day I can sit and play during a service.  The only advantage is I am free to move more and worship more while standing...
