Taking a gig at another church. HELP!!!
« on: October 29, 2006, 08:39:04 PM »
Alright folks.  I have been playing the drums at my home church for the past 7 years.  In that time, I have grown trumendously as a player and person.  I have dealt with many different personalities in our music ministry and survived 2 ministers of music.  In all of this, I feel that I have grown as much as I can at my home church.  I have been asking GOD for a change, and I think I may be coming up on my request.

Recently, I played a gig with a bass player in town that plays at one of the biggest churches in town.  He mentioned that they were looking for a cat because their drummer took a full-time gig at one of the other mega churches in the city.  We talk for a minute about it, then he invites me out to rehearsal.  I go to rehearsal and play.  Everything is cool.  I talk with the MD and she invites me back.

This is dirrected more to the musicians that have been faced with simular situations.  Like I said, nothing is in stone.  Its only a possiblity.  I am asking for advice from the cats who have been faced with situations when you had to leave your home church where you have been a member to play for a church that you are not (and may never be) a member of.

Help me out cats!!

I was in your shoes about a year ago dude, Just reall pray hard about it and wait for a sure answer from God because it really is hard and if your home church is like mine thay will not agree to it at all because they will be thinking about themselves and not well this could be a oppurtunity for another cat to get his training under that leadership, but I honestly feel that if the ministries good and you're not jus going for a check but seeking more from God then do your thang Bro. Good Luck, I ended up leaving and old church stopped speaking to me doc... and they're in the same place not growing when I left them and I have matured way more spiritually going thru all those changes so dude pray and wait and be blessed.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

There is no easy answer on that one doc! I have been in that situation several times, but I am still with my home church...My home church teaches the word, takes care of me($$$) and they care for me as a person.....I prayed about it and I realized the other(bigger)churches could pay me more, but I would just be another number and another person on the payroll....The church I am at actually needs me, they pay me, and I am able to do more than just play my instruments...I am able to do things in other departments and even effect the community my church is in...I say pray and see if you can meet with not only the MD, but with the Pastor to see where they are and then make the decision based on what will be more adaptable and acceptable for your schedule and family(if married).

God Bless

like everyone else sez, do pray.

One thing to consider,

Is this a spot where you can get spiritually fed? Cuz yeh, the pockets get fat, but you dont wanna be under wack teachin. Thats the worst.

Balance is key.

Fat pocket, fat spirit......

J,

You referred me to this site so I gotta say a lil sumthin'. Teaching is the most important variable in your decision. Leaving home is always tough however like Abraham we have to move when God shows us that he can make us great if we trust him. Musically its always great to play with other musicians who are on your level of expertise however be observant of them being on your level spiritual level as well. It's nothing worse than playing with Kats who can't inspire you other than musically. Levitically speaking these kats should sharpen you in word too.. Be ready for the backlash. Go ahead and forgive them in advance.

Well, I too am in the same situation of sorts. I know that you aren't about the $$$$$, so there's no need to go there. It seems to me, knowing you the way I do that God has been preparing you for such a move. You just got blessed with a new job with Verizon Communications and now this. I know that you pray before you act. So, I would tell you to look into the situation a little more, get the logistics of the music department and the ministry as a whole. If you feel that it's right, and you definity are hearing from God, then go get your inheritance.
