Songs that aren't appropriate
« on: October 25, 2006, 07:50:38 AM »
What are some songs that you've heard sung or your choir have sung that isn't appropriate for the occassion or a certain part in the service? For example, my old choir would sing songs all the time that just shouldn't have been sung during a certain point in a service like the hymn, "The Solid Rock" during the invitational. That song has nothing to do with being reborn in Christ or giving your life over to Christ. I just think since the choir is a ministry, that they shouldn't just sing songs just to sing it, but the songs should reflect what's going on in the service (i.e. altar call, invitational, communion, ect.)

Also, got a question is "I Won't Complain" a song to be sung at funerals? If so, why?

Somebody posted a long time ago, I think it was bishop2, that an organist was playing "Glad to be in the Service" at a funeral.

... He didn't have to let me live...

Man! That still cracks me up!

"on Christ, THE SOLID ROCK, I stand. All other ground is sinking sand."

Hmmm, how is that NOT appropriate for the invitation to come and serve the King of Kings, the CHIEF cornerstone, the Lord of Lords.  ?/?

Because it starts and ends with HIM, THE SOLID ROCK. Maybe I'm crazy (shut up, all of you  ;) ), but it works for me.

Well since the question was asked..... I feel this is as appropriate a time as will ever be presented to say this.

Again, I'm just saying this because the question was asked...

Fred Hammonds... When the Spirit of the Lord Comes upon myheart I will Dance like David Danced...

So the worship leaders is in the microphone encouraging the people to dance. " Come on now Dance" " Get your praise on" Move your feet" etc...

Problem:

We are at  a Veterans Hospital where they have wounded, bed ridden, ampotee's etc...... had come to the Chapel for service.......

OK it is only funny 5 years later.... Those men and women were looking like  " Um..........dance??" ?/?

Now, that has nothing to do with the song, but with the Praise Leader, in this case.  ;D :D ;D :D :D ;D :D ;D :D :D ;D :D :D ;D

Somebody's going to say something about having faith and all that, but still.......

That's simple.  This song is not Biblical.  How are you going to yell to the Lord to not pass you by.  He is omnipresent and omniscient.....He won't skip over you.

Man this makes me so mad I can't take it. I get so upset when I go to a church and the choir sings stuff that don't go. Or sing stuff just cause it sounds good, and NOBODY has researched to see if this song has a scripture basis. Everything in the service pose to flow from the Responsive Scripture on down to the Sermon, songs included.   :(

My friend told me that one time it was a point in the service where everybody was in worship and on of the mother's gets up and starts singging   "I Know I Been Changed"  :o ?/? ::) >:(
So out of order that was!!!
If it had not been for the Lord on my side, where would I be!!!

I dig that.

My former pastor didnt want the choir singin certain songs, just 'cause they "feel" good..

Example..."Long as i Got King Jesus, Don't need nobody else"

there's a scetion that sez "in dont need no doctor, lawyer, preacher, teacher"

Um hello? aint a teacher part of the five fold ministry?

I don't know, looking at the lyrics for that song, it just doesn't seem like a song to be sung during that time. Nice song, but maybe not for an invitational.

Joyful as the song may be, that surely wasn't the place for it!  :D

Unless, we have differing definitions of what "the invitation" is, I still don't see how this song DOESN'T fit.

Exactly. When my old MOM wanted me to teach certain songs to thechoir because she couldn't play them, I turned her down because they weren't songs that were of the word entirely. Needless to say, she played it anyway, as bad as her playing was, just because she wanted it sung. Next thing I know she'll probably have the choir sing  "Work Me Til I Sweat" as a praise song song at the start of service.   :D  :D

I don't know about in anybody else's area, but a few years back, some churches were doing R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" during Praise and Worship Services. It would make me cringe EVERY TIME!!  >:(

Oh no, my MOM don't play dat, you tell her you wanna teach a song or want us to sing a song, she will straight ask you where is it in the bible and expect you know, then she wants to know what does the song mean to you and even if she ok's it to be taught, it is not in stone that once the choir got down it we gone sing it the following Sunday, cause the song has to fit with the season, (easter, thanksgiving etc) upcoming the other songs being sang, and morning hymn and responsive scripture and if the pastor knows or has an idea of what the sermon gone be about.  She don't play AT ALL.

We fall down but we get up
We fall down but we get up
We fall down but we get up
FOR A SAINT IS JUST A SINNER WHO FELL DOWN AND GOT UP? ?/? ?/?

Hmm the scripture:

Pro 24:16  For a just [man]  not a sinner falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked (sinner continues to ) shall fall into mischief.

I don't know in the scripture where a saint and a sinner are the same person???

The song implies that the two are teh same if that is the case....... claim Jesus and hsi power and ability to save and deliver but still mess up......it's all part of the cycle???

Speaking of songs that aren't appropriate, I just got off the phone with my sister and I will be going to church (my old church) with her and the rest of the family for "friends and family day" on Sunday.  She asked me am I singing, I ask "what ya'll singging" she proceeds so say some off the wall stuff  ::) that number 1;  I DON'T KNOW and number 2; have nothing to do with each other, and then one song she was like, "the last time we sang mass, we sounded so good on that song, so we gone do it again", WHAT DA WORLD!!!  ::)  Just some random songs!!  I STRONGLY DISLIKE THAT!!!  So now I have to pray that I am not gone be sitting there Sunday with an attitude  ::) ?/? :o :-[ :-X >:( wishing I was at my church.
