I agree, considering that you should be doing it to serve the Lord. But of course if you have made it a profession, you'll probably want something every night.

The Bible says that the laborer is worthy of the hire (Luke 10:7).  I think that you should be compensated according to your time and your ability.  Regardless, you should definately be compensated, however if you don't rely on music as your income, then aint nothing wrong with that.  You should take some time and study the construction of the Tabernacle in the Bible. (I Chronicles 15:16-24) When David put the Levite band together, he did not invite them to come and donate their time, they were skilled, annointed and paid musicians.  I am cautioned to say that the Bible says that they were paid, it is only my opinion.[/color] I don't ready specifically in the Bible where preachers were paid either.  BUt I do know that in the bible days people would take care of the preacher.  They would house them and feed them.  In most churches the Preacher is paid to serve, so why not the musicians and others if the church can afford it.  Only my opinion.

Agreed. My thing is I don't get paid as the MOM(My church is small and I get paid doing other events), but if a ministry is able then I would say they should be paid. Most piano players I play with get between 100-250 a week to play. Be blessed

I think eveyone would agree that it depends on the ministry, and their budget.

The bible does speak of those that are in the Levitical order getting compensated by the church.(the Levites were not only the musicians)

Now you may not want to be paid. Thats commendable. nothing wrong with that. I've done that in some places where I knew they didnt have it like that.

But the church should not cheat the musician. I've seen churches not pay the guy that's been faithful for years, but when he goes on a vacation, and they get a fill-in, then they'll pay the fill-in.

Thats Bad Biznezz.

250 is cool, (but may be low for NY standards, I think)

Also, as a side point the musician should not hold the church hostage either. I've seen that too. That usually happens when the musician really doesnt care about the ministry.

If you love the ministry you're in, then the $$ may not be a major point 4 u.

But again, if they can then they should.

Thats some good stuff there.

I would advise when dealing with paying musicians contracts are needed. Things need to be clearly indicated in writing what the church expects and what the musician expects. Once again do not agree to an amount that you know the church can not cover. I believe musicians should be paid (equipment is not cheap)however, if you are not being paid then the church should pay for what is needed(This is the route we take in my ministry but as the MOM I still pay for all my stuff). If you are paying one musician then all should be paid equally according to there duties(Under paying a musician is an insult that creates unwanted drama) Be blessed

If you choose to pay a musician do it right or not at all.

Personally, I think  God gave me a talent and I should use it for Him.  However, I am not in a financial position to do it for nothing. The preacher is getting paid, but the church I play for offered me $100 per week - that's for Thursday night choir practice and the Sunday morning service.  I live in Southern Indiana and the church is in Kentucky, which is about 40 miles round-trip.  This was taken into considering when the offer was made.

I have a 9 member choir, 4 sopranos, 3 altos and 2 tenors, so my music is limited.  Can you suggest something along the same lines of; Order My Steps? :
Thanks,
Alex Wiley

Your music is only limited by the type of voices, not the number; but, I digress.

Try "Blessed be the name" by James Hall

or try any GMWA CD  ;)
