Georgia, Mississippi, Colorado, New Jersey....those are choirs. James Cleveland had a choir.


Now, before anybody gets they knickers in a knot, this is simply an opinion.

what is your definition of a choir

I totally agree.  We don't even bother with the traditional choir marches we used to have back in the 80s and 90s also.  It's true though that singers like Kurt Carr and Kirk Franklin like to keep "in the family" of smaller numbers but it depends on what direction God would have you to take.  There are still a few choirs making it like Hezekiah Walker and Pastor Timothy Wright who continue to travel with there 20+ choir members!

I'm hearing this buzz and notion that the P&W movement is destroying the traditional church choir.

Points I have heard are

1. You can do more with a smaller (trained) specialized group than a mass choir.

2. Better voices in Ensembles and P&W groups

3. Better material

4. Less to deal with (attitudes, characters & personalities)

5. More selective with a smaller group.


What are your thoughts? I'm seeing it a little bit too

 I have an appreciation for both. I am a P&W leader and I absolutely love my team of 7. We work together and spend timne together so we have a bond. We are friends who also happen to worship on a team together. For worship it is powerful. Now on the other hand I sing in what we call an ensemble is it 32 people. All very gifted vocalist. it's challenging and we can oush the envelope. Our tenors all have the range of your average Alto and so on for Alto & Soprano. So we love pushing songs to the limits by singing 5 and once in a wihle 6 part Harmonies on songs that traditionally only have 3 . It's fun and a challenge. You can't always do that with big choirs. The skill level is not there. The smaller you get the more you have to be able to  stand on your own vocally.

As far as The artist out there it's more econimical to go smaller. You can do so much in the studio now it's unbelievable. So artist can get the choir sound without the choir. I think the trend will continue.

I agree. And everybody is in it NOT for the work of the Lord but for the money.  That's why you see smaller groups like Kurt Carr and Kirk Franklin nowadays.

in my personal opinion i think your off on all counts especially #4 now you have these divas (male or female) who think they actually created music and #3 whats out now thats better any hot choir that we could pick out. also #2 nobodys praise team sounds better than james hall WAP, ricky dillard & NG, hezzie's choirs, LA mass, and a whole lot more

the traditional church choir sang alot of music from those whom i mentioned and most praise teams in a church sing songs from recording artists just the same. so that being said the word you typed (which i bolded to) was better so when making a distinction please be distinct

QUESTION???.....now yal know i dont post much but this topic as wokin sumint in my spirit.......question is who said you cant have a choir and a praise and worship team???....and are weah talkin choirs in the industry cuz then i feel wat evreyone is sayin but if we're talkin in church my thing is stop bein lazy (MOMs") and teach both learn ALL the music you need to......

Too much of anything is not good.

Sometimes i want the power, majesty and clappety-clap-clap of a choir

sometimes i want the intimacy of a soloist.

sometimes the flow of an ensemble.

mebbe a quartet song....(canton spirituals, anyone?)

hey, how about an Anthem?

ohhh, love those Arias....

heck, gimme a piano and a trumpet player.

and dont forget the boom bap of Holy hip Hop....
