Do I have to learn to Sing to be a M.O.M?
« on: January 01, 2008, 09:20:33 AM »
How much singing does a musician/M.O.M. need to do? I take piano, but can't afford to take voice lessons too and I am no singer, but I can hold a tune well enough. I want to know what should I be working on in training my voice?

I know that a M.O.M has to teach parts so I know I need to be able to sing the pitch I am giving them. Is there anything else i need to practice?

Thanks

Not true.

It varies from ministry to ministry.  If you have a director, you can get them to teach parts.  If you do not feel comfortable teaching, let them know when you take the task of MOM (if you haven't already).

Thanks!

I am currently in a ministry where the director gives the notes out of her head from listening to the CD and she does not have perfect pitch. This results in an unharmonic sound many times. I would like to help, because I can play the pitches on the piano, but I doubt my ability to sing the parts well enough and I certainly don't want to be trying to "Take Over" the choir. lol

From your comments I gather I should do what I'm comfortable doing.

And, I certainly won't let NOBODY make me a M.O.M. at my level of musical knowledge.

I think it would be very hard to direct a bunch of singers if you cant sing yourself

I would like to help, because I can play the pitches on the piano,

Why don't you talk this over with the director and see if you can help teach her the correct parts in private so that when rehearsal comes she knows the right pitches.  This is what I do at my church, I figure out all the choir parts, give them to the director, and she teaches the parts to the choir.  You don't have to sing at all if u don't want to.

Thanks for all the info. If the spirit so leads me to talk with her then I will suggest this to her, but I don't want to cause any problems!!!

On a personal note, I think I will work on my singing voice. I don't want to be limited in any way. I may be placed in a situation where I have to sing, because there isn't a person who can give parts correctly.

This has happened to me already!

From experience I've found that there aren't many trained musicians in rural areas, so you may have to work with a choir that has 0 training.

Whats another 30 minutes a day to work on my voice.

Thanks Again
