COGIC HYMNAL
« on: August 28, 2006, 01:24:37 PM »
I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this.  I only read music and I was in the process of ordering some additional music.  I notice that the Church of God in Christ Hymnal entitled "Yes Lord" is available to order.  But the place I order my music from does not list the songs that are included.  By any chance if someone has this hymnal or has seen it can you give me an idea of some of the songs.  I'm looking for simple praise and worship and catchy type songs for offering & to use with my 8:00 am service choir.  Thanks and God Bless!

Here's a nice one I believe it was chorded by T-Block, it is L(left hand)/R(right hand) or bass/treble form:

Here is some chords that I use. You can transpose this into any key and repeat as many times as you like:

Key of Db   LH/RH   *means hold previous chord/note
                             <means filler chord

     / Db,Ab          Yes Lord
Db / F-Ab-Db
Eb / Eb-Gb-Db   <
E / E-G-Db   <
F / F-Ab-Db   <
 * / Eb-Ab-C                  Yes
Gb / Db-Gb-Bb               Lord
G / Db-E-G-Bb   <
 * /     *                         Yes
Ab / F-Ab-Db                  Lord
Eb,Db / Eb,F     <
C / Bb-Eb-Gb     <
F / A-Db-Eb-Ab, Gb   <
Bb / Ab-Db-F    <
Bb,C,Db,D /  *               Yes
Eb / G-Bb-Db-F, Eb,Db    Lord
 * /   *                           Yes
Ab / Gb-Ab-Db-Eb           Lord
 * / Gb-Ab-C-Eb  <
 * /   *                           Yes
Db / F-Ab-Db                  Lord

After that you can just make up something to get back to the beginning. Here are some suggestions:

  Ending 1
Db / Ab-B-Db
 *  / G-Bb-Db
 *  / Gb-A-Db
 *  / F-Ab-Db

  Ending 2
E / D-Ab-Db
Eb / Db-G-Db
Ab / C-Gb-Db
Db / B-F-Bb-Db

That is just a little bit of what I play when my mom starts singing it.  I wish I had a way to make a midi of it so yall can hear it.  But, if you need some help with it, let me know.  I hope this helps someone.  One!!!

Hi VMW,
I also only read music and have purchased the 'Yes, Lord' COGIC hymnal.  I am Lutheran so I was wanting to move to a more updated gospel feel.  The hymnal reminds me a little of the National Baptist hymnal, though the hymns are updated.  The print is larger and clearer, and I ordered two; one has the spiral spine which makes turning the pages easier.  I don't have it here at home with me so I can't give you the song list, but it does have the standards.  I don't use it much because I sort of collect hymnals from different faiths and some of the songs I have in other hymnals. The chords are medium in difficulty and seem to have a bit fuller feel than just the plain hymnals.  Don't know what you are used to.  Some hymnals have really fat chords that are full and beautiful with a twist, which is great for those who only read and haven't quite caught the concept of 'fleshing out' the chord to make it soulful.  It has been trial and error for me. I hope that this info helped.  Even if you order it and don't use it much, it is good to have an additional resource for when a visiting Pastor leans over and says 'Do you know that old hymn called "    "?  and I sit there going, huh?  Historical hymnals are great for those moments!

Thanks so much for your response.  I can tell you read music because your response was on point.  I am Baptist and I have a full assortment of hymnals so I was curious about the COGIC Hymnal because I have all the standards and most of the newer updates and I didn't want to pay 45.00 for the same hymns.  I need some simple praise type songs and they are so hard to find.  I feel embarrassed when I'm at a church and someone starts singing something and I can't play it.  I know a lot of songs and can sing them but I just don't have that ability or gift to pick them up (yet).  Anyway thanks for the info and I guess I'll go ahead and order the hymnal.  I'm sure it will have a few songs that I may not have.   Thanks again, VMW

Welcome to lgm clavi.  :D

I wish I could find a few cogic hymnals. My organization needs to make one. One day I may just do it myself. We sing many songs different from the newer churches. Some songs our founder wrote. I need to find those and get them in book form.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

 :) Hi Everyone,
thanks so much for the welcoming from all.  This site I think evolved from a different site that I used to visit many years ago.  I am proud of all of you that got together and made this so professional and helpful.  Because I read music and because theory was so confusing to me in school, reading the different boards and rooms makes me realize that it is time to start learning again.  VMW I am probably where you are.  The best praise and worship books I have found so far for readers is anything Maranatha for Praise and worship.  I have a purple cover, a green cover, and a red cover, all spiral.  The red cover is really great, with a mixture of contemporary styles.  The green cover has many church standards but with updated chords.  I haven't seen the green one since it was bought by our church so it may be hard to find.I would also suggest the Beige AAWH (I think it is the African American Worship Hymnal) again, don't have it here with me and I rarely look at the title of the hymnals.  But this one has stuff in it like Perfect Praise, Order My Steps, Anointing Fall on Me, Total Praise.  Medium difficulty, lots of praise tunes that could be used over and over.  You would really like this one. I will try to remember to get the correct names and perhaps in the cover I can find the publisher so that you can order it if you like.

How to Find Printed Current Music for Music Readers
« Reply #10 on: August 31, 2006, 09:30:31 AM »
 ;) VMW, I just had some more thoughts as I thought about your question on hymnals, praise and worship, etc.  I did some research.  The hymnal is called the African American Heritage Hymnal.  Very good resource and probably more to what you are looking for.  Also, any WOW Gospel yearbook of sheet music has the most popular songs for the year printed and many of these songs can be shortened to use the vamp for praise and worship.  You just 'take it to the bridge' as James Brown used to say.  For example, on Smallwoods' "Healing", this can be vamped very successfully during a spiritual interlude where the pastor is praying for particular situations that require healing. Or Smallwoods' "Thank You". (Typically Smallwood is difficult to play for me if sight reading, but if you practice when you are alone, the Spirit will move you to know what to pull at the appropriate times.  The Spirit usually takes over and I know that it is God providing me with all I need.) You can be very creative when the music book is right in front of you or your stack is on the rack next to the piano.  I realized that I have made quite and investment in musicians music books from their albums over the years, but unless the artist is J.P. Kee, Franklin, Smallwood, McClurkin or all of the really big artists you may not want or need all songs.  That is where the WOW 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and sheet music websites such as www.musicnotes.com com in, where you can order one song that can be emailed to you after you have paid for it.  You are allowed to preview at least one page to determine difficulty, and usually there is a MIDI track to ensure you are getting the piece that you think you are getting.  This worked really good for me when I played for a funeral for a member that was from the islands and there is a classical funeral march that is traditional there but was unknown to me.  I was able to find it and just download the music to add to my repetoire.  :o
