Is it wrong to take the Lord's Supper in another church?
« on: August 23, 2006, 02:23:35 PM »
I'm asking this because I'm going through a hard time with my local church. Give me your opinions or ideas about this then I'll tell you what is going on.

Please answer the question.

Please be advised, this is only what I was taught.

I was born and raised in the Baptist church, and was taught, if you are saved and have been baptized, then you can take it at another church, or if you are at our church, but not a member you can partake with us.

Again I say, that is was I was taught.

Short answer, no.  ;)

No it's not wrong. HOWEVER. Make sure the church you are visiting practices "open communion". In other words, make sure they allow visitors to partake of the Lord's Supper in their house. Not all churches allow visitors to do so.

It's not wrong. But be careful with WHAT you drink.  One time I took communion in another church and they served REAL wine instead of grape juice!  >:( >:( >:( >:(

KeptbyJesus I agree with you. SisterT the church I play for on sundays do have "open communion". Tania 108 I bet you liked the REAL wine :D.
Short answer, no.  ;)

sjonathan please I said also to give what you think not just an answer. ;)

 Here is what's going on.
I play for two churches. I've been on both for like a year now. On tuesdays, thursdays, fridays(reharsal), and saturday I help my local church in playing any instrument.
This local church is the church in the same ministry I grew up in. So I know a lot of people from this ministry.
The other church I play for I am only there on wednesdays(reharsal) and sundays for both services. I go to this church because it's a real blessing to be there. This church only been around for one year and already has over 200+ members. Also because the group I'm in is thinking on recording and doing big things for God and I want to be part of it.

Well my local church put this new rule that if your not there on the sundays the Lord's supper is taken then you can't participate on anything. So I went over to the pastor to talk to him that I already take it in the other church on sundays when they have it. I thought that he was going to say ok and that's fine as long as I'm taking it. Well he says that it's wrong because this is my church and that I shouldn't be helping no other ministries. He tells me to choose where I want to play. I don't see what the big deal is, since it's the same grape juice and bread which means blood of Jesus and his body. For the ministry I grew up in, going to help out other ministries is like betraying your own. That is why this ministry has not really done anything big in the last 30+ years because of mentallity like this. I hope your church doesn't think like this because when you really want to do something this kind of mentallity is going to hold you back. Rules set by man and not by God are going to get on your way also.

My mom and dad go to the pastor and talk to him. Ha says that he will talk to the other leaders to make an exception for me. Well it turn out that he didn't talk to nobody and now I can't do nothing in this church.

So this is my plan and I have pray to God about this. I am thinking of leaving this church and going to the other one and play there. Reasons I am leaving, not only because of that new rule, but also that I am now like a reserved musician. I used to play guitar now the drummer does. This other guy is playing drums now. The keyboard player hogs the keyboard and I rarely get a chance to play. If the church was bigger then I could bring me own keyboard and play. I don't have a position anymore and I'm not does kind of people that go to church to just warm up the pews. I like to do something and that is to be a musician for God.

Well they don't need me anymore for what I have seen. The group is doing ok. The pastor and leaders don't seem to care about if I leave. If they only who I really am, they would make an exception for me.

The other ministry respect my position, even if I only play there on sundays. Once I get my own car I am leaving for sure to play more days at this ministry. I have prayed and I think God wants me there. I will keep praying.

So what do think on what is going on? Thanks.                                                                         Sorry for being too long.

Derik, I sincerely encourage you to get the book "Exposing Spiritual Abuse" by Mike Fehlauer.  Read that and you will no longer be confused.  Whether or not to take the Lord's Supper in another church is not your main problem from my viewpoint.

Yeah I know this is not the main problem. This was just the one thing that really told me to leave that ministry. It's the big one, it's like God is telling me not to go there no more and focus more on the other ministry. Since I don't have a position and can't even pick up the offering money then i'm thinking of leaving.

The rule was made by man not God. This just stops me from doing what God wants me to do.
This is also why I'm leaving, I'm tired of seeing pastors and authorities in church putting there own rules out of no where. This is why churches don't grow spiritually and in numbers.

This is what they say "We put rules so that the people will change their bad ways"
This is what I say "Then why does Jesus exist? Isn't he the one that changes the person from their bad ways?
If you notice a thug that accepts Jesus, at first he dresses all baggy. After a few months he dresses casual. Who change him? Rules? NO NOT RULES. Jesus change him from time to time. I know I have seen it before.

But I did wanted to know if taking the Lord's Supper in another church was bad. If it was then I would be doing wrong.

Thanks. Anyone else?

Be strong brother and stay on your face! As for the communion participation elsewhere, I do not feel you are wrong. Stay encouraged, clarity will come!
