Need Advise On Getting Over Fear
« on: August 17, 2006, 09:58:57 PM »
Man, it has been a long time since I made a post. I saw the post about "Let's hear you sing".  I could not do it. I want to show the gift that God has given me, but I can't.  I don't know what is wrong with me.  That fear is always there.  I know I can sing.  People tell me I have a beautiful voice all the time at church.  But, outside of church I can not sing.  To let others hear me sing is nerve wrecking. Singing in a group is great, but I am a soloist so this poses a huge problem sometimes.

I told folks on here before, I feel like people will think that I am showing off and I don't want people to think that.  I know it's just me, but how do you get over the fear and be bold and not be ashamed to share what God has give you.  Don't get me wrong...........I am by no means ashamed of my gift, but I hope y'all know what I mean.  Do y'all have any advice?  I welcome any suggestions.

Smooches!!!  :-*

I know what you mean. I have had the same problem for years. What I have learned is that God gave everyone the right to be yourself. I don't know about you, but the same fear was controlling other parts of my life. It kept me back from being the person I know that God gave me the right to be. Don't let those feelings determine who you are, and who you will become. I had to learn not to be concerned with what people are thinking, you will most likely be wrong because it is your lack of confidence that is talking to you. Always be concerned with what God thinks. If something in your heart is telling you that you are showing off then stop. If not be free. If you are being free and someone says that your are a show-off, they might not like to see you blessed. The problem is not always you. #2 rule-don't let what people think determine who you are. I am still growing, but I have to take that fear out of my life totally. The singing was just one part of my life that fear was controlling. #1 rule- always lean on God even in those times. Talk to God about it, and be real, and he shall begin to make permanent changes in your life. Be blessed.
For you have been my hope, O Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth.

I understand what you're saying SoulFlower.  That's why I posted my clip, I feel that I am not a very good singer, but it's good to face your fears in order to get past them.  Once you face it initially, it gets easier every time you do it.

When God blesses you to be very good at something, you should not feel like you are showing off when you use what he's given you, after all, he gave it to you to use.  As long as you are careful to give God the glory and realize that it is he who makes it all possible, then you are not showing yourself off, you are actually showing God off.

I am sorry it took so long for me to respond.  I been crazy busy  ::).  But, I just want to thank you Qwan and Nessa. Thank you for the encouragement.  I really do appreciate that.  You both are right. I am not a show off, I just feel that others will think so if I do more runs than usual or something.  For example, my choir was invited to another church to sing at their choir appreciation day.  I sang I Know I've Been Changed by LaShaun Pace.  The spirit was high in the place and I have never been so hype on the Lord before.  I sang that song like never before and there was not one person seated.

I felt wonderful just knowing that God had moved through me and I felt it for once and so did others.  He used me in a mighty way and it was wonderful.  But afterwards, a lady from my church who is known to be sarcastic and say bogish things told me that she told another lady that since their were singers there doing their thing that she knew I would show off.  Needless to say I was offened but kept my mouth shut about it.
The fact that there were other singers there doing well had nothing to do with the way I sang.

Well...........let me take that back.  Their singing blessed my heart and helped me to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and allow it to move me. So, I thank God for those other singers.  But, my point is that that is the kind of reaction I am afraid of.  I don't want to sing so well that others think I am showing off. So, I tend to hold back a lot. You know what I mean?

I know I need to face my fear but since I have been this way since I was 4, it's kind of hard to do. I will keep trying though.  I have too. Once again, I thank you for your words of encouragement and letting me know I am not the only one who feels that way.  Many Blessings 2 Y'all.

When  You give God glory singing by His Power. It  is a testimony to   what He can do with us  when we  yield  to Him.

OH YES YOU DO! WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR US TO PAT OUR SELFS ON THE BACK  ?/? ?/?

DO YOU THANK GOD FOR EVERY DROP OF ABILITY YOU HAVE. IF WE ARE SO GRATEFULL TO HIM THAT OUT OF BILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD THAT HE BLESSED US WITH A MUSICAL GIFT, TO ME THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS. HE KNOWS MY HEART OF HEARTS.

I POSTED "WHAT DO YOU DO" TELLING PEOPLE TO SHOW THEIR TALENTS!!!! 3 RESPONSES, OH WELL WE SHOULD HAVE GOALS FOR OURSELFS AND EVERY GOAL THAT IS REACHED SHOULD BE CELEBRATED. IF NOT WHERE IS THE JOY OF ANYTHING THAT WE DO.

I HEAR IT ALL THE TIME " HE IS JUST SHOWING OFF" AND FOR A WHILE I STOPED SIGNING AT CHURCH WENT BACK TO THE CLUBS WHERE I WAS NOT JUDGED.
ALL THE APPLAUSE ;D ;D ;D ;D AND I WAS NOT THINKING "MAN YOU ARE GOOD"
I WAS THINKING "MAN ALL OF THOSE CRAZY VOCAL EXERCISES REALLY WORK "

GOD HAS ME ON A SHORT LEASH SO THAT DID NOT LAST LONG!

BEING HUMBLE IS TAKEN TO THE EXTREME BY SOME. NOW THIS IS ONLE MY VEIWS.
THE PEOPLE THAT SAY"HE IS SHOWING OFF" WERE THE THERE WHEN I SPENT 4 YEARS IN MUSIC SCHOOL, PRACTICED THE BASS TILL MY FINGERS BLEED.
VOICE LESSONS,PIANO LESSONS. NO !!

I CAN NOT EVEN REMEMBER HOW MANY TIMES THAT I WAS TOLD "YOU STINK" WHEN I STARTED.

I CAN POST A CLIP OF MY STINKY VOICE IF THAT WOULD MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE FAITH IN YOURSELF NO ONE WILL.

Ndel and Thomas..........thank you both for responding  :D. I assure you both that I do thank God for my gift.  Not a day goes by that I don't sing unto His name. And Thomas I'm sure you don't have a "stinky voice"  ;).  If you have taken lessons like you say you have then your voice must be beautiful.  I have always wanted to take voice and piano lessons.  But, where can you go to get them without paying an arm and a leg?
