is the major 7 and dominant7 the same chords? I was looking at the chords chart and I noticed that the fingering looked the same.

MAJ7 - C-E-G-B
DOM7 - C-E-G-Bb
MIN7 - C-Eb-G-Bb
minMaj7 - C-Eb-G-B

I use the same fingering for all 4, but sometimes I'll vary it, depending on what was just played or what I'm about to play.

What B3 said.

One way to separate them in your ear is this:
maj7 chords want to "stay" (they are "release" chords)
dom7 chirds want to "go" somewhere else (they are "tension" chords) - in the case of Cdom7, it's likely you'll want to go to Fmaj7

A major 7th chord uses an added major 7th note:  C-E-G-B

A dominant 7th chord uses an added minor 7th note:  C-E-G-Bb

Try lookin' at it like this:

The C Maj 7 chord is all white keys (I'm only using this for this chord example, it is NOT a general rule of thumb)  C-E-G-B

The C dom 7 chord has one black key C-E-G-Bb (which is your black key)

Again, we're just talkin' about this froma visual standpoint. For a hearing standpoint, go with what Elio stated.

I hope that helps a bit.

Act2 is referring to the chord chart in LGM lessons area, both the Maj 7 and Dom 7 piano chart are showing the Dom7.  The Maj 7 piano chord chart is incorrect.

i just always think of maj7 as the III minor with that root's bass.
example  Cmaj7 is like an Eminor on the right hand and a C on the bass
Ebmaj7 is like Gminor on the right hand and an Eb on the bass

or you can think of it like a V chord over the I bass
example Ebmaj7 would be like a Bb chord on the right hand and Eb bass
Bbmaj7 would be like an F chord on the right hand and a Bb bass

until it was natural to me these are what helped me through those early days.
Sorry if the band seems too loud tonight.  Now go tear Psalms 150 from your bible and sit down. ;-)
