I saw your post in the other room. If it that inportant to you, go to your pastor and state your case. A closed mouth does'nt get fed. Maybe your pastor has a good reason to do what he's doing. Personally, after hearing your story, I think it's kinda chessy that your pastor has to do all that just to keep the keyboard player around. Sound like if the keyboard player isn't the star then he may leave, I don't know. Do what you gotta do.

I'll say this much.

ALOT of people have this perception that anyone can play the drums.  That drummers aren't musicians, and that we're a dime-a-dozen.

Recently a brother came up and sat down on my kit one day while I was practicing.  He tried to do something he heard me do.
He was like: "How come I can't do it?"

 ?/?

Why can't you do it?  Because I've spent time practicing.  I've come to the church to practice while you were home watching Sportscenter (I work for ESPN.  Sorry for the plug  :D ).  Because I drive my wife crazy with my practice pad DAILY.  Because I had to do that lick slowly, then build up speed till I could do it in real time.  Then I had to do it over and over and over and over till I could do it at will.

He's not the first person to disrespect what I do.  As a matter of fact, I'm going to do a spin-off of this in a new thread.  Look for it.

Back to my point......

Many people are under the impression that Keyboard players, Organists (which is what I'm pursuing), guitar players, etc. are more musicians than we are.  Ignorance is not bliss.  They don't know the time we spend to perfect this craft.  And it's a shame because having a great drummer can really amp the energy in a service.

What exactly is your issue?

The fact that he gets more money or more attention than you?

Either way, they are both wrong reasons to be in ministry.

God Bless.

Their are drummers that aren't musicians. Their are pianist's, guitarist's, etc, etc, etc... who aren't musicians, either.

Some are just athletes, who prefer to express themselves instrumentally, as opposed to the playing field/court.

Truly and quite a few are making big bucks right now.

The thing is to first understand who you are.... you are supposed be a percussionist whom may be specializing in drum set... not a drummer.

Then you have to increase your value by increasing your preparation and understanding of music, including theory and sound. Follk don't know what you don't tell them or display and you cannot tell them or display what you don' t know. Carry yourself accordingly: Gear in bags, keep fresh sticks in a nice stick bag, play dynamically and always in the moment with flow of the spirit and the order of the house. Always be preparedand always step your game up.... you are only as good as your last performance... always give God your best to work with.

Yo man if the keyboardist is just showing up to play and is not the M.D. then you need to talk to your pastor first! If he doesnt see the light then quit and leave them with no drummer for three months and just sit in the audience during service, when asked why just be honest and tell the truth.

We've gotten off the point of this thread, but basically, talk to your Pastor about it.  Ask.  Knowing is better than speculating and guessing, and wondering.  Once you know why he's getting more, you can go from there.

Natural human response is to feel slighted and de-valued. The real issue is why do you feel de-valued? What is your value? What do you bring to the table? What is your goal when you play there? Is it to play a demon up outta someone or is it to keep a beat? Is it to elevate the praise and worship? Can you control the people from your throne - meaning can you touch them, make them feel the Spirit move through your playing? Do you bring the praise team together and make them more comfortab le?

All these things and more can go through the Pastors mind. If they don't they should. If they don't maybe you are not projecting/serving up that value.

That's exactly my point.

The issue is not the other person & how they play or how much more they get regardless of their playing ability...
It starts with yourself. Only you can feel devalued at the expense of another person.

How would I feel? Personally, I did not love music & drumming because of the millions of $$$ that I could make from it.
I love music because God blessed me with this talent. I return the favour by doing my best to direct people to him WHEN I play.

In any case, I wouldn't care if he was making more money than me. I would praise God for blessing a fellow musician.

Great questinon. This is making me feel strange because I dont get paid to play the drums, and I am the lead drummer for the church. Money has never crossed my mind.

I don't think that a good reaction would be to just not play to make your point either... I think you should go to the pastor and make your concern known to him. He cannot fix what he may not be aware of.

My church offered to pay me, and I turned them down. It is not a huge deal to me to be paid for that, i just want to play for church, thats all the payment I need.... But I see that may not be the case for everyone here..

I agree with you also Sabe... you bring a wonderful point of feeling de-valued. You are making me take  look at myself and my values as well... I likes.
