What Style Are You Learning/Studying?

This is another post about style and the study of regional development.  It is not uncommon for musicians in a certain are to sound alike or have similar styles.  In 2006 there are many ways to develop a style different than the one in your region.  So state your style or region and the style you are studying if they are not the same. I am really into the Philly/Neo Soul sound right now and I'm from NY.  There is a church in my area that has musicians that play like they're from Philly.  That is what prompted this post.

Im tryin to study that Brooklyn Style......im from philly but i grew up in bermuda......so im just tryna get a lil somethin under my waist
im also studin that baltimore sound as well

I'm from St. Louis…I'm not sure what style we're known for, but I've been focusing on I guess East coast style with using the whole tone scale for the root of my chords but switching between minor and major 7 chords for passing chords to get to where the song normally goes…

An example of this would be something like….take a 7-5-6 change that's common. I'm not good at typing this stuff out so bear with me I hope I can make it make since. Something simple would be like:

Key of Eb
LH/RH

D-F (the 10th not the third)/A-C-E-G
G-FAb/BEbFBb
C-Eb (10th)/BbDF

This is the normal movement in gospel well, to make it more colorful or weird however you look at it you can…..obviously walk up from the D to the G and the G to the C using any type of chords. For example, and I'm not at work so I'm not exactly sure how this will sound but go:

D-F/ACEG
E-G/BDF#A
F#-A/C#EG#B
G-FAb/BEbFBb
Ab-Gb/AbBbBEb
Bb-Ab/BbCDbF
C-Bb/DEbG

*This is just a theoretical example, I didn't exactly follow the whole-tone scale here, but mimicked parts of it with the DEF# and the AbBbC movements. You can do all types of variations of this where you open the chords up more (I just like block chords), change the chords to fit your melody.You can vary it based on a different type of scale and make substitutions with your bass notes, people do it with the dimished all the time. Also, for organists just take that bottom note for your foot pedal and play the major chord for the other note in the left hand (only for the passing chords not the main chords of the progression) and keep right hand the same. As always with music the possibilities are endless. I hope this makes sense.

I play in an AME style. In the AME church I play and direct for you have to be good at hymns, old school gospel songs, and competorary music.

RIGHT NOW IM TRYING TO STUDY/INVENT TRADITIONAL AND THE NEW AGE SOUND. IM TRYING TO PULL BOTH OF THESE VERY DIFFERENT SOUNDS TOGETHER.


IM ALMOST TO THE LEVEL OF WHERE PEOPLE CAN NOTICE WHAT IM TRYING TO DO BUT, NOT YET.

Thanks for typing that all out.  It looks like they're all minor 11 or minor 9 chords.  Am I correct?

Yo I'm from Syracuse, so i listen to pretty much the same organists that peole from the city do.  I got a boy though thats from up here but he got a straight Florida style, SICK.  But i'm good at new stufdf but i'm tryin to grind out on the old stuff too.  Example, the othre night I was at a concert and a local quartet The Bells of Harmony got up to sing and asked me to play with them.  D major all day but I did my thing and they were really impressed that I was only 18 and could grasp their style of music.

I am studying a thomas Whitfield style right now

I am from NY and everyone here seems to be all up on brooklyn style but Charles minor is really into the detroit chicago sound

and although it is not really appreciated here in NY it is stil whats up

A lot of ny/rs are really into the James Hall sound or Hez

but to be honest for real church services I prefer the chicago Detroit sound
