sound modules
« on: June 15, 2006, 02:08:23 PM »
hey i have a question do any of you go with a sound module over the actual board like for example instead of getting the motif es 8 you can just get the motif es rack which is the same thing but no sequencer and midi it thru any keyboard you already have instead of buying a bunch of keyboards or do yall just buy the boards cus i own a roland a80 and i just buy sound modules most of the time they are alot cheaper than 2,888 for a new board let me know what yall do and think about SOUND MODULES

I have one and I like the idea of having two independent sound sources. My rig is:
- 88-keys weighted controller (old Clavinova)
- Rack (Triton Rack)
- 61-keys synth-action keyboard (Yamaha S30), sitting on top of the Clavinova
The OUT of the Clavinova goes to the IN of the Triton. The THRU of the Triton goes to the IN of the S30.

This way I can layer two sounds (usually piano/strings) playing on the clavinova: the piano comes from the S30, the strings from the Triton.
If I want to play, say, organ, I play on the S30.

Having a module allows me to independently combine sounds from two sources without having to create new 'performances' on the S30.

Highly recommended.

I have Roland xv-2020 that I use with my Kurzweil sp-88x. I am going to use it this sunday in my cousins church.
This is my first and last module. You can't really use a module for live playing. Especially if you need to be changing sounds a lot. I guess I might take it to my cousin's church. Tough decision ;D.

That's not true. The reason YOU can't change sounds is because your keybord isn't sending the right midi data to the controller. I can change sounds AND program the sounds I like into my M-Audio Keystation 88 Pro controller. It has buttons just for that purpose. When you use a keyboard as a controller, you sometimes sacrifice features. The only downside to my controller is the key action, but at $450 it's easier to replace than a higher priced keyboard.

Agree with B3 here.

And don't underestimate the freedom of changing sounds separately. Say you have sounds A,B,C on your keyboard and you want to combine them with 1,2,3 on your module. If you did not have the module you'd have to switch from 'play' to 'performance' mode to combine them as you wish, or you'd have to pre-program 3*3=9 performances on your board.

If you have an independent sound source you can mix them as you wish while not having to stop playing. A lot of times I keep playing with my LH while the RH changes sounds on the module, with some experience you can do it quite smoothly.

yea thats true having the roland jv2080 myself its really easy to change sounds on it it has a very big lcd screen on it the screen is bigger than the xp80 screen and it has all the buttons on the module that you would find on a real keyboard so i really dont have to use the roland a80 controller for anything

I understand. The problem with the xv-2020 is that it has the sounds in diff categories. You turn the knob for pianos and eppe's. the organs are in a diff section, the strings and synth are in diff sections also. Sure it has user banks but the banks don't have the sounds I use most, so i have to keep turning the knob and remembering the # of that specific sound. This makes it hard for live playing. The keystation 88 pro is more advanced in controlling sound modules than my kurz sp-88x.

Yea. You can send a bank change with it too. I haven't tried mixing sounds from different banks on the presets though. Right now, I don't have a good module and my best sounds come from using my KME-61 as the module. I have an old Roland Sounds Station Piano module, that I bought for $100, but the sounds are fairly old and to me, only useable in a mix and not as standalone instruments.
