T-Block's Ultimate Shouting Music Post (Key Eb)
« on: June 03, 2006, 10:41:46 PM »
Hello fellow musicians, and welcome to my post of shouting music that I play.  I got everything broken down into parts:  LH basslines, RH chords, RH runs, and LH & RH together.  This post contains just about every note, every chord, and every run that I currently play during shouting music.  Not only do I have the chords, I also got music theory to go along with everything.  So, you will be learning chords and theory at the same time.  This will be helpful when trying to learn in other keys.

I really wish I had the equipment to make a midi of my chords, but unfortunately I don't.  Maybe later on I will be able to get the equipment and let yall hear exactly how it's supposed to sound.  So, without further commentary, enjoy the chords!!!

LH Bass Lines

This post is all about what to do with your LH when playing shouting music. What you are doing with your LH is called running a bass line. No matter what happens, always keep your bass line going.  The bass line can function with or without any RH chords, but not the other way around.  This is what drives your shouting music. Without this, your music will more or less be dead. As for how many bass lines there are, there are tons of bass lines, but I am going to focus on 2 of them.

1. The first bass line you should learn is the classic shouting bass line.  The scale degrees you are playing are:  3, 4, #4, 5, 6, *#6/b7, 7, 1  I'll also put the fingers I use beside each note:

Eb (1) / index finger
G (3) / pinky
Ab (4) / middle finger
A (#4) / thumb
Bb (5) / middle finger
C (6) / thumb
Db (b7) / middle finger
D (7) / thumb
(repeat)

*The reason why I have a #6 or b7 is because that note maybe a #6 in one key, but a b7 in another key.  Both notes sound the same, but you have to name the note correctly according to your key.

2. After you got that bass line down, you can add on the second bass line that you should learn, which will just be an add-on to the classic shouting bass line.  The scale degrees you are playing are:  2, *#2/b3, 3, 4, 6, *#6/b7, 7, 1   I'll also put the fingers I use beside each note:

Eb (1) / middle finger
F (2) / thumb
Gb (b3) / middle finger
G (3) / thumb
Ab (4) / index finger
C (6) / pinky
Db (b7) / middle finger
D (7) / thumb
(repeat)

*Same thing applies to the #2/b3 note as it does to the #6/b7 note.

Other basslines:

Eb, F, Gb, G, Ab, Gb, F, E
Eb, Db, Bb, A, Ab, C, Db, D
Eb, G, Bb, A, Ab, C, Db, D
Eb, Db, C, B, Bb, C, Db, D
Eb, G, Bb, C, Db, C, Bb, G
Eb, G, Bb, C, Eb, C, Bb, G

RH Chords

This post is all about what to do with your RH when playing shouting music. You can either play chords or runs in your RH.  Here, I am going to focus on the chords.  Your main chords for playing shouting music are the minor 1and minor 2.  Here they are:

Eb-Gb-Bb (1) = Eb minor
F-Ab-C (2) = F minor

Also, you can add the minor 7th note to those chords and play them like that.  Here they are:

Eb-Gb-Bb-Db (1) = Eb minor 7th
F-Ab-C-Eb (2) = F minor 7th

You can also play a combination of those chords above.  You should really get used to playing those chords forwards and backwards.  Here are a few practice sets for you:

/ Db-Gb-Bb
/ C-F-Ab
/ Bb-Eb-Gb
/ Ab-C-F
/ Gb-Bb-Eb
/ F-Ab-C
(repeat)

/ Db-Gb-Bb
/ F-Ab-C
/ Gb-Bb-Eb
/ Ab-C-F
/ Bb-Eb-Gb
/ C-F-Ab
(repeat)

/ Db-Eb-Gb-Bb
/ C-Eb-F-Ab
/ Bb-Db-Eb-Gb
/ Ab-C-Eb-F
/ Gb-Bb-Db-Eb
/ F-Ab-C-Eb
(repeat)

/ Db-Eb-Gb-Bb
/ F-Ab-C-Eb
/ Gb-Bb-Db-Eb
/ Ab-C-Eb-F
/ Bb-Db-Eb-Gb
/ C-Eb-F-Ab
(repeat)

Other RH chords that are used in my shouting music are:

Major 4 = Ab-C-Eb (Ab major chord)
Dominant 7th 4 = Ab / Gb-Bb-C-Eb or Ab / C-Gb-Bb (Ab 7th chord)
Fully diminished 1: Gb-A-C-Eb (Eb fully diminished chord)
*Dominant 7th chord = b7-3-5-1: Example = Db-G-Bb-Eb (Eb 7th chord)
*13th chord = b7-3-13-1: Example = Db-G-C-Eb (Eb 13th chord)

*These 2 chords can be formed on every bass note.

RH Runs

This post is all about what to do with your RH when playing shouting music. You can either play chords or runs in your RH.  Here, I am going to focus on the runs.  A run is simply a scale or a part of a scale.  A scale is a group of notes that start and end on the same note.  Just like bass lines, there are tons of runs you can play in your RH, but here I am going to focus on the ones I use the most.  I don't know the names of all these runs, so I will just give you the scale degrees used to play them.

1. The scale degrees for the 1st run are: 1, 3, 5, 6, 1

/ Eb (1)
/ G (3)
/ Bb (5)
/ C (6)
/ Eb (1)
(repeat)

2. The scale degrees for the 2nd run are: 1, 2, #2/b3, 3, 5, 6, 1

/ Eb (1)
/ F (2)
/ Gb (b3)
/ G (3)
/ Bb (5)
/ C (6)
/ Eb (1)
(repeat)

3. The scale degrees for the 3rd run are: 1, #2/b3, 4, 5, #6/b7, 1

/ Eb (1)
/ Gb (b3)
/ Ab (4)
/ Bb (5)
/ Db (b7)
/ Eb (1)
(repeat)

4. The scale degrees for the 4th run are (backwards run): 1, #6/b7, 5, #4, 4, #2/b3, 1

/ Eb (1)
/ Db (b7)
/ Bb (5)
/ A (#4)
/ Ab (4)
/ Gb (b3)
/ Eb (1)
(repeat)

5. The scale degrees for the 5th run are: #2/b3, 2, 1, 6

/ Gb (b3)
/ F (2)
/ Eb (1)
/ C (6)
(repeat, play really fast)

6. The scale degrees for the 6th run are: 2, #2/b3, 2, 1, 6, 1

/ F (2)
/ Gb (b3)
/ F (2)
/ Eb (1)
/ C (6)
/ Eb (1)
(repeat, play really fast)

7. The scale degrees for the 7th run are: 1, #6/b7, 6, #2/b3, 2, 6, 5, 6, #6/b7, 7

Eb / Eb (1)
Db / Db (b7)
C / C (6)
Gb / Gb (b3)
F / F (2)
C / C (6)
Bb / Bb (5)
C / C (6)
Db / Db (b7)
D / D (7)

I bet now you are probably asking yourself 2 questions, "How do I use these runs?" and "When do I play these runs?"  Well, that's entirely up to you.  Practice and experiment with them until you discover where they go.  These runs will become very handy once you learn how to use and play them correctly.

Again, T-Block doesn't have the equipment. But, maybe DDWE would have the time and energy to put together a WMV file or a midi.  ;) ;D
