Help! tritones for circle of 4th chords.
« on: April 04, 2004, 05:04:30 PM »
I made a circle of 4ths practice sheet to help me in my quest for playing fluently in all keys; But I'm not sure about my tritones on the Major7 chords. The tritones that I play consist of the 3 & b7 notes of the scale, but they don't sound right when I play the Maj7 chords on my circle of 4ths chart. So I tried to figure them out by sound (my ear) & the 5 & 2 of the scale sounds right but I'm not sure. Can anyone tell me if this is correct or give me some theory. I'll write out the first 6 chords of the circle only. Here goes...(starting with C).

Bass(keynote)/ LH/ RH

C/ G D/ Eb,G,Bb,D ...(Maj7)
F/ A Eb/ Eb,G,A,D...(Maj7b5)
Bb/ F C/ C#,F,Ab,C...(Maj7)
Eb/ G C#/ C#,F,G,C...(Maj7b5)
Ab/ Eb Bb/ B,Eb,F#,Bb...(Maj7)
C#/ F B/ B,Eb,F,Bb...(Maj7b5)

Thanks. B3Maniac! [/u]

Instead of G-D, F-C, Eb-Bb, etc., try E-Bb, D-Ab, C-Gb, etc., and flip your other tritones so that your left hand is just moving down in half steps....

....That's easier.

Thanks Bro,

I'll try it that way. I actually do flip those other tritones, I just typed
them in wrong. Thanks for all your help and for always responding.
You're a blessing. Later Bro.

B3'S RIGHT
YOU CAN'T PLAY TRI-TONE WITH M7 CHORDS, YOU'RE BETTER OFF WITH THE 1 & 5 IN THE LEFT HAND, THE MAJOR 7TH NOTE IN THE RIGHT HAND IS WHAT PREVENTS YOU FROM GETTING THE SOUND YOU'RE LOOKING FOR.
BECAUSE IT'S A MAJOR 7, NOT A DOMINANT 7TH, OR FLATTED 7TH!
THIS WOULD WORK:
EBb / CEGBb
EbA / BEbGb
DAb / BbDF
DbG / ADbE
THAT'S GOING CHROMATICALY BACKWARDS, IN THE SAME TOKEN, YOU CAN PLAY THIS:
EBb / C
EbA / F
DAb / Bb
DbG / Eb
CGb / Ab
BF / G
BbE / C

THERE'S YOUR CIRCLE OF 4THS WITH TRI-TONES! :!:
EACH TRY-TONE HAS TWO CHORDS:
EBb / C AND Gb
EbA / F AND B
DAb / Bb AND E
DbG / Eb AND A
CGb / Ab AND D
BF / G AND Db
BbE / C AND Gb [AGAIN]
