I have, but then you know choir directors can be lunatics at times.  This was years ago when I had a small, 35-watt solid state Peafey and a cheap Memphis Strat copy.  I had just recently started playing at church and it was kind of messed up.  Poeple were saying I was too loud when I couldn't even hear my self.  I may as well have packed up and gone home.

I haven't but I have told many drummers and organ players to turn down. When the chior have to scream to be heard above the music then its time to turn down. Lead guitar players normally turn up because sometimes you can't get that true feel when the volume is too low. I like playing when everyone is turned a nothch or two low because then people can really hear the words to the songs.

I did just this past Sunday. I really did have it turned up, more because I was sitting on the amp and couldn't hear myself. I just moved in front of the amp and turned it down a notch. What would really help me I believe, is to get an amp stand to angle the amp and raise it off of the floor. Anybody agree? ???

Was the guitar you were playing back then a Strings and Things/ St. Blues guitar?  What model did you have ie; bluescaster, bluesmaster, & etc.  If so what did you think about it.

I've been using an angled amp stand for over a decade, both back when I played the clubs and then in church.
It's a must and can help eliminate volume issues by raising it up off the floor and out of direct ear shot (depending on the height of your stage) and can be better directed at the player for use as a monitor.

And I've never been told I was too loud in church...at least not that I remember...usually I've had some bassists that were loud but more times than not it was a technique issue and not a volume issue...you know, when someone who doesn't know how to slap and pop but they try to anyway and it sounds just B A D...like somebody kicking a trash can...

I think that I'll head to The Guitar Center and pick one up Saturday. Our bass player is just the opposite though. He is much to soft and conservative. Although he knows his stuff, he thinks the band should lower the volume to a level where (I think) it won,t be heard throughout the sanctuary (based on the acoustics at my church, mind you).

Often times we'll have people who will sit right "in" the musician's area - first row, first chair - then complain about the music being too loud! These people are often handled gently and ignored.

  C'mon now...you know YOU'VE heard that sound; the strings being pulled WAY TOO HARD and then they slam down on the fretboard hitting all the frets at once...tell me, doesn't it sound like somebody kicking an old tin trash can? 

I had to tell one guy to PLEASE stop doing that...just play the note written on the page and don't be going all Andrew Gouche' on me (unless you're Andrew)

No.  The brand name was "Memphis" which was probably a contract guitar.  It was made at a factory in Korea (probably Samick: they make guitars under contract to several other manufacturers including some Ibanez, Squire, Cort, and thier own brand name).  The guitar was a basic Strat clone with cheap tuners, a cheap 5-way switch, and a pretty nice black metalic finish.  The guitar had "Fire Power" pickpus which sounded nothing like a Strat.  They featured a pair of ceramic bar magnets on either side of row of 6 steel poles.   The clean sound was sort of interesting, but far from the pristine clear tones associated with Fenders.  I had a 1-watt RadioShack amp and I used to crank it.  The cool thing was that when I used the bridge and neck pick-ups togeather, it produced a nice high gain overdrive and then would clean up when using just one coil at a time.  Although the pick-ups were nothing like a Strat tone-wise, I liked the bridge pick up best for clean sounds.  I don't think that there are anymore Memphis branded guitars being made anymore but I did see a double-cutaway Les Paul copy that made me miss my old Memphis Strat.  Also, I knew an elder that had Memphis P-Bass copy among his collection.

My first electric was a Memphis Les Paul Custom copy...circa 1980ish.

It was not a bad guitar at all. It was no Gibson Les Paul but for $180 (I think that was the price) it did me well for a couple years.

This is one of the reasons I always use an amps tand.  Also, if you're not facing your amp directly, it will sound a lot muddier than it actually is.  You will end up killing folk with treble.

mt_spiffy: you just spoke prophetically into my situation!!! I always have the treble waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy up!!! It sounds good from the back of it or the sides, but in front, it was terrible! I never really gave it any thought on the dynamics of it all.
