This probaly isnt the answer you wanna hear, but I suggest that you work on you fingering, and timing.

Knowing the correct fingering will help you execute the phrase with a lot less effort.

When doing runs, timing is critical. You have to land on the right note at the right time. Sometimes  you might not give yourself enough time to finish a run, so you may have to skip a note or two in order to land at the right time. I'd rather do that than land on the note. I hope that makes sense. And I hope it helps.

I find that many times the run is simply  a major scale, but the player skips back on some notes before he continues going down. When adlibing and soloing what you can do is just play chords with you left hand, and play "random" notes in your right, as long as they are the same notes that are in the left hand chord it might just sound good

I hope this helps until some of LGM's big dawgs come thru.

U13, this is pretty good advice.  Learning scales is really important though.  Take your time with it and develop your own technique.

Good stuff man. Nothing more to be said on this issue.

It is annoying though when you get folks who don't know theory and they have the nerve to tell you what you are playing is wrong. ::)

The other keyboard guy in church knows so little theory and yet he tells me that my runs are all wrong cuz they are not in the key of the song.

Example.

In church we sang a song with this progression (original key is Eb);

Fm7, EbMaj7, Bbmaj (3rd inversion) and then Gmaj. So on the G major, i play this run: G A B D. This dude said i was wrong to play that and it sounds off. I told him no its not off because the fact that i play a Gmaj gives me the right to grab some notes off of the G major scale.

I was so upset over this i nearly refused to play. I am still a bit peeved at this.

Also, Ad libing is the same thing as improvision. I'm sure you have seen improv comedy like "whose line is it anyways" or "wildin out". What they do is just take a scenerio and just flow with it. They take whats given to them or what others do, and feed off of it to create something spontaneous and unique. There is a big difference between performing something thats scripted, and performing whilst adding your own twist.

Us musicians have to learn to do the same thing. Our music is a lot more entertaining and interesting when we can move away from the script and freestyle a little.  If you've been playing by ear for a while, it should come easy. You just gotta experiment with different things and not be afraid to take chances.

My point exactly. You have to try some "out the box" things, like playing in different keys, playing randoim dissonet notes etc..

You are right man.

I guess we should mention that ad-libbing is not the same thing as randomizing. When we hear these jazz guys play all these crazy scales and licks, these dudes know what they are doing and why they are doing what they are doing.

Its all about knowing your theory and then being able to apply it to what YOU want.

No need to be upset.  You obviously know more than that guy so just keep it moving.  Sometimes I'll find something that works and I'll come up with my own theory for it.

He actually got mad cuz of that?  Heck, all u did was play the notes of the same chord.  That's crazy, that dude either has a few issues, or he mad that he didn't think of that run.  People are always afraid and get mad at what they either can't do or don't understand.

Lemme be fair to him T. I was the one who got upset. I didn't show it or say anything mean cuz we were about to play the song. I don't think there was jealousy in what he said, he just didnt understand why i did what i did and i didn't have time to explain.
