The 11th chord is begins like the major triad, and just goes up to the 11th scale degree. Now there are only 7 notes in the major tonality with 8 being the octave, 9 being the second, and 11 being the 4th. As for suspensions, there are many different kinds, so its hard to answer. Suspensions in music give a feeling of tension and release. A common occurence is the 4-3 suspension. In the key of C a 4-3 suspension would start as C-F-G and resolve to the major triad C-E-G.

Hope this helps

Here are  some simple formulas for  11th  chords

   Major 11th chords

  (1) Take any note (root)  left hand
  (2) count down a whole step and form a triad (right hand)
  (3) place the triad over the root
  (4) Example C/D =D11       d - c  -e - g

 Major 11th chords

   (1) take the V7 chord
   (2) place over the tonic root
   (3) Example  G7/C = Cmaj11

 Minor 11th chords

  (1)Take any note (root)
  (2) go up a 4th
  (3) add a 4th
  (4) add another 4th
  (5) three stacked 4ths = a minor 11th chord

example Dmi 11 ...... D -G- C-  F

Good luck

Is this the process you follow to form your 11ths when you are playing?

Do you mind the thought process you follow when you want to play 11ths in songs..

I just think of them as 4ths with 7ths in them..I play the 3rds most of the time, so all I really have to concern myself about are the 7ths of the chord I intend to play next..the 4th is not that much of an issue because I know it's either a whole step above the 3rd (minor) or just a half step (major).

That's how I think of it before I hit the chord..so what I do think about more is the voicing of the chord..but that is primarily determined by the melody note for me..

I hope all this makes sense.
