fat guys , big hands , which drumsticks?!?!
« on: February 24, 2006, 10:50:34 AM »
What size drumsticks should guys with fat hands use? I understand that everything is personal preference, but I'm sure there is some kind of guidline as far as hand size and recommended stick size. What does eric moore use?

First let me say that I am slender,  ;D.

Seriously though....
Truth be told most drummers use the wrong size stick for their hand dimensions. With proper grip technique and understanding of fulcrum and rebound you can use anysize stick within reason.

Because most sticks are around 16"-16".75" long it tends to leave the deciding factors of bead, weight distribution and diameter. The bigger the hand the bigger the diameter and the longer the stick should be. I am more comfortable with longer sticks 16.75" - 17.25" even 17.5" Alex Van Halens (Regal Tip). I have fairly big hands//long fingers that are strong. I can play drumset with Ralph Hardimans need be...  I use Vater Fatback 3As most times I play and , Virgi l Donati Assaults, DSK David Silveras, Night Sticks when I am playing hard. Lately I have been using Trueline 5B to relax my grip (They are way light for my taste though). I may bump up to th Danny Carey - Vic Firth stick. For smooth jazz/quiet church I am currently playing hickory sweet rides from Vater.

Diameter wise I like .555 - .625.

Also if you have strong hands you want to go with a larger diameter stick so that your grip remains loose.

The bigger you hands /stronger your hands you need a longer stick to account for the balance/levarage being in the proper place.

Try a Maple stick from Vater. They last and you can go bigger in diametter with the extra weight.

You may also want to look at the Truline 5B PowerGrrip with e hump in 'em they are big, light and relax your grip with letting the stick fly out of your hands. Try them for a week or so then try the Lil John stck and teel me if it feels different.

I have been trying out some new sticks: SD4's have a nice weight and balance for me. and I have a huge hand! I also really like Trilok Gustu Signature sticks from Zildjian. They have a thumb notch built in, and they are dipped so they dont slip that easy. Very nice well balanced sticks. The Teardrop tip doesnt respond like the bead on the SD4's though. I also love the Dennis Chambers Model.

I will definitely be trying out the others that were mentioned.

God Bless.

So that hand pain could be caused by playing too small a stick? I didn't know that. I recently bought a pair of Vic Firth 8a sticks and since I've been playing with them my hands have been killing me (especially between the thumb and index finger). ER, you know you're telling the truth about those SD4. I love those sticks. I have a couple pair of the SD4's in hickory wood and they're really good also. I've been thinking about playing the SD4's exclusively for some time now. I'm gonna go ahead and throw in a few pair of Maple Vater 8a's. Unfortunately, you can't just go in a store in this part of town and buy a pair of maple 8a's or HD4's (hickory SD4's). As for now, I'm staying away from anything smaller than .545 in diameter.
