I say get a Steve Ferrone Signature 14"x6.5" (nickle-plated brass with 24kt hoops) . It has a wiiiiiide tuning range, from high and tight to warm and fat. It is about to be discountinued so get it whiles it hot! Costs about $350-389 at Guitar Center. You will not be disapponinted if you aare an experience player/working player or aspiring to work.

My next recommendation would be a 14"x6.5" copper Yamaha Nouvou. It has pop... wide tuning range and a sound like maple with a lil' extra cut.

Next 14"x5.5 Yamaha Roy Haynes Signature copper with internal muffler.

Next choice.... Virgil Donati Sinature from Pearl. 14: 5.5" 8-ply shell 4-plies maple & 4-plies birch. Extra sentive because o fthe flat snare beds. die-cast hopps and just straight crackin'

As far as cymbals these are the best voices to build your sound on:

20" AAX Stage Ride
18"  HHX Evolution Crash (not the Ozone)
18" AA El Sabor Crash
13" AA El Sabor Salsa Splash
12" AAX Splash
13" AAX Fast Hats
18" Signature Jia Chinese
19" Vault Crash
14" HHX Evolution China

I agree! Id also add The Simon Phillips Model 14/6 Bronze..Tama
Kenny Arnoff Black Nickel Plated Engraved Brass, Brass Hoops 14/5 Tama
Also Mapex has some really nice snares also look at Peace drums.
Forget DW! Way over priced! I dont find they are worth the money (weel atleast here in Canada when you can buy top of the line Yamaha for way less!!!!))
Mapex Drums, Grant Custom Basses, Carparelli Basses, Istanbul Cymbals,!

I would recommend going with Evans Heads. G2's on toms...with Resonants. and for the Bass Drum, go with a EMad Batter side, and EMad or EQ3 Face side.

Sabians cymbal choices look good! As far as a snare goes, A copper is a good purchase, may I just through in another option. Pearl Free Floating Copper, 3.5, 5 or 6.5. Really nice snare. And you can definitely pick it up in your price range. A really nice warm snare, that is highly underrated is the Pearl Masters MHX African Mahogany snare. I have one and I love it!

God Bless.

No offense to E_R or anyone else...  but honestly Every Drummers first real snare should be a good/great 14" full size. THat is the most versatility an dbang for fo the buck.

I already know someone is going to disagree but truth is truth.

Aside from that...

Evans G2 tops ... I prefer coated for a big warm sound.  Evans Resos for a high end cut or G1 clears for warmer tone on the bottom.

EMAD batter or EQ3 batter with EMAD Reso front. EMAD coated for even more attack.

Audix Fusion 6 mic kit = $299. or Just get a Audix D6 for the kick Audix I5 for the snare and  2x Audix F15 overheads and turn the overheads up and they will pick up the hats cymbals and toms for about $350.

Hey Sabe, take it easy... haha. I support 14" snares more than anything else. And if you notice, what I recommended are 14" snares. I do know that much. Now this is just a question for me personally, I am going to be switching to G2's on my toms, and getting rid of the Hyds, so G1 reso side is warmer than a reso head? hmmm...I will need to try that.

God Bless.

I'd like to speak on behalf of the Ozone (I'm the self proclaimed, unofficial Ozone spokeperson like the guy in the Wendy's commercial)...I personally think that you can't go wrong with the 18' if you ever need a little flare in your cymbal rotation. As a matter of fact, I'll buy one from anyone willing to sale one. The 16' XXplosion is also very nice. Overall though, I love Zildjian K's and a few Sabian HHX's here and there

And I have that Tama 13 x 7 Artwood, I definitely recommend it...it's a beautiful thing
But as far as specifics, Sabe gave you a pretty good solid list up there.
Health, Wealth, and Peace of Mind.

I saw Standing in the Shadows of Motown about 2 years ago and every musician should watch it. I thought Bootsie Collins did the world a favor by shining a spotlight of truth on these guys and the history of making hits.
