I've always wanted to know how to perfect this technique as well.  When I hear people like Shirley & John do it, I want to drink some water for them.  I don't know if they're excersises or what for this.  When you know, let me know.

Hey,

Growlin and other vocal techniques come with practise. While your voice is developing, im sure with practise you will be able to growl and perform other vocal techniques. For now be careful if you are trying to growl as if done incorrectly, you can damage your vocal chords and that leads to problems!.

Singers such as Shirley.C and Aretha can deliver gut wretchin growls and billowing vibrato's, but their voices are well matured. All comes with practise

I agree.  The funny thing about it is that I'm not much of a singer...I used to be, but yeah...ahum..but when I do sing, I try to do it too!  Gurl, just practice and one day God will bring it out in you!

I think growling LOL has to be in a certain range of your voice. Like if you try to growl singing high or to low but Im pretty sure a trainned professional would say that this is not good for you. LOL The thing is some people cant distinguish growling from hollering.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

There are some voices that may be too delicate for growling 1st thing...
2nd I think it's a technique (if you ask me) When you're singing in the middle of your range go for your note and push real hard (from the tummy)

I agree with you mysteryman. It is the type of voice you have.

All of you are right. It takes a special kind of voice as well as the positioning of your jaw and teeth! Yes this sounds funny but, take it from a person that has had years of vocal training. If you will start paying attention to singers mouths as referenced to their jaw positioning, you will see the difference. Like for instance, John P. Kee has a terrible overbite, but will sing you to death! as other as stated, you can learn this vocal growl with a lot of training, or unless it is God-Given! Yeah when it comes to growlin', I think the Detroit women have that on lock!! The Clark Sisters are growl queens (especially Twinkie and Karen), and Vanessa Bell Armstrong is THE most effortless singer I know. These women can do all kinds of growls and runs and high notes and squals and still come back and do 12 more songs!! I don't get it!!
