What do ya say we stop posting chords LH/RH?
« on: January 27, 2006, 06:56:04 PM »
I think its better for an upcoming player to see chords as CM7 or Eb/Db etc... and then have the LH/RH spellings on the bottom of the chord charts. That way the chords is actually learned. Its one thing to know a bunch of voicings, but its another thing to know what those voicings make.

I agree with you about the learning chords part. I try to post chords like this for example:

LH / RH = name

C G B / E G A D = Cmaj13

Whenever somebody posts chords without the chord names, I always try to name the chords myself. That way, I can transpose more easily, and maybe the chord names will reveal how the chord progressions follow a pattern. In the end, however, I think it's up to the particular poster how to post their chords.

Posting Chords
« Reply #2 on: January 27, 2006, 08:16:39 PM »
I have never posted chords, and let me first say, as a beginning, self-taught player, this site has been a Godsend.  I can't begin to thank the posters(ones who post) enough for them to really know how much I appreciate what they are doing.  But I must say this: IT WOULD BE BETTER TO POST THE CHORDS IN A MANNER THAT REFLECTS THE STANDARD METHOD. LEFT HAND ON THE RIGHT OF THE SLASH AND RIGHT HAND ON THE LEFT. It would be harder at first for people like me to get, but we would learn and it would serve us well in the future. Since I have never posted chords, I would have to assume that it would make postings harder as well.  As far as the posting of chord notes or note letters that make up the chord, it doesn't matter to me.  If I want to have the chord name on there, I look up the chord and write it there if i don't already know it.   My over-riding thought though, is to say "thank you" to those who have posted cchords, however you posted them. You have really helped me.

That's not a problem tfor me..but the first thing people would say that they don't know what a CM7 chord is and then to go back and rechord it is a bit too much. So I just use to doing it LH/RH but either way is fine with me. I know my chords...

That's not standard, and I've never seen anybody post like that. Here’s an example of what you’re probably thinking about:

Cmaj13/E

That's slash chord notation, which is different than what you're talking about. Yes, the E might be played with the left hand, but not necessarily. Oftentimes the bassist would be playing the E, not your left hand. Slash chord notation is simply a way of naming a chord to indicate which note goes on the bottom.

I agree ltljake with ya...for me its easy to learn like playhear said but on here most of the people post just the notes in LH/RH and I most of the time have to look up the chord in my chord book to get the name and sometimes I can't even find the name anywhere, and then I ask tons of questions and bug people to give me the name of the chord...I probably aggravate a lot folks but man thats how we develop our skills! But I like what playhear said about how he posts stuff like this:

LH / RH = name

C G B / E G A D = Cmaj13

You have the notes and the theory of the chord...but unfortunately a lot of gospel sites and message boards like this have just the notes in LH/RH...

where I agree that it is important to know the names of the chords, this site is called learngospelmusic, so I would say spell out the chords with LH/RH then put the name of the chord next to it, otherwise it is almost the mentality of find it yourself, and to me that is a little cold blooded, this is said in love so please don't take it as argumenative, peace!

I guess you can chord songs out anyone you like.  All you have to do is tell us before hand how to read and play your chords.  There are ways to learn your chords and symbols that are already on the site.  Seek, and ye shall find people.  However, no matter which way you do it, there will always be somebody that's gonna complain about it.

I used to post the chords along with the name itself, but it was so time consuming that I only posted the chord names, then stopped posting altogether. Although we shouldn't post that way (LH/rh ...which has been debated here and at other gospel sites for years now) people are used to it. Ever since Gospel Melodies, 1997, 98 (before Learngospelmusic came into existence) people have posted that way (and yes, there was a chord chart on there too, well a link to one, as well as people posting many times on how to learn chords). Here it nearly ten years later and it's still going on, if people wanted to learn the right way, they could have, the resources have been out there, but it's up to them.

If there's anything I've learned from being on this site and others, is you can't make people do anything, if they want to post that way, wrong or right, they'll do it. In the meantime, if you want to post chords without LH/RH and not spell it out, then go ahead, but others will post how they please regardless.
