Techniques for using my left hand?
« on: January 07, 2006, 06:17:24 PM »
I struggle the most with using my left hand. I can easily play a chord in my right and the root with the left as long as they play at the same time , but when they play at different times or more than one note, I get in trouble. Any tips? I'm a beginner, btw

You guys need some left hand training. Here are some ideas...

1. Practice doing your scales in your left hand while doing inversions of chords in your right hand. Incidentally do the same thing with right doing scales while left is doing inversions.

2. Pick up some nice easy arrangements of P&W music or hymns etc. Ones that are using the full grand staff and start playing those. The way usually taught to learn these is to practice both hands seperately first and then slowly, ever so slowly, measure by measure, put them together.

3. Doing both of these will begin to give you a good well rounded repetoir of being able read and play sheet music and playing by ear.
