hello i don't know anything about a piano and i have been just taking tips off of here. what is the fastest way to get a basic chord for up beat gospel music and for worshiping.

Well, first you need to learn about the piano.  Visit the basic music theory post and start learning.

Thanks for all the hard work you have put into helping other's with this ministry. I'm a newbie and I am beginning to see how much work will have to go into learning the keyboard. It is an awesome blessing to have someone share what they have learned with everyone!!!! And FREEEEEEEEE!!!! I don't know if anyone else is calculating what the cost would be to get all this great info if it had to be paid for but I'm reading like a crazy woman before ya start charging!  ;D God Bless and thanks again!!!

No, the 2# means there are 2 sharps in the key of D.  It starts with your thumb, just like the C major scale.  So, it goes like this:

D  E  F#  G  A  B  C#  D  E  F#  G  A  B  C#  D
1  2  3    1  2  3   4    1  2  3    1  2  3   4   5

I got all the major scales listed w/fingering below.  Some scales u use the same fingering, so I grouped those together.  The parenthesis tells how many sharps (#) or flats (b) are in a key.  Are u straight now?

WHEW!!!! I'm so glad you cleared that up cause I could see myself getting arthritis reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaalllll quick if it was the way I thought!! thanks so much. Someday I'll send ya a song that I'M playing on the keyboard cause of all your help. Thanks.

Thanks for the post, it's really sped things up. Every day i use the sheet music for the scales. Helps me get better at sight reading.

I have a question, can i get the fingerings for the minor scales, not just the formulas (the post gives the formulas which are great)? I'm especially trying to get the pentatonic scale fingerings down and its kind of not easy :)

A while back I posted some guidelines to help learn the correct fingering for playing the major scales, but since then I've added a few more. Here's an updated list:


1. You will ALWAYS start a white note major scale with your thumb in the RH. 

2. You will almost ALWAYS start a white note major scale with your pinky in the LH.  The only exception is the key of B, which you will start with your 4th finger.

3. You will NEVER start a black note major scale with your thumb.  You will most likely start those with your 2nd or 3rd finger.

4. All white note major scales end with the pinky in the R.H. The only exception is the F major scale, which ends with either the 1st or 4th finger.

5. All white note major scales end with the thumb in the L.H.

6. All black note major scales in either hand end with the finger it started with. One exception is the F#/Gb major scale, which can end with the pinky in the R.H.

*moving foward in LH, backward in RH
7. Don't cross until you have reached your thumb. In other words, run all your fingers out.

8. Once you reach your thumb, stop and think which finger to I need to cross over to play the next note.

9. Your 4th finger will almost always play ONLY one note, so if your next note isn't the one to be played by your 4th finger, then you will cross over with your 3rd finger.

*moving backward in LH, forward in RH
10. Don't tuck until you have reach your 3rd or 4th finger.

11. Once you reach your 3rd finger, stop and think do I need to tuck here or keep going to my 4th finger to tuck.

Thank you for sharing your great ministry. I have been a member here for some time but this is my first post. After being on a 5 year hiatus from the music ministry you have been a awesome help to me and I for one wanted to give you your flowers while you could still smell them.
