Diatonic variations of a common Gospel transition
« on: October 05, 2005, 06:53:12 AM »
I just learned this today in my practice and decided to share it.

We all know (or have heard) this common gospel transition from 6 to 5.

Key: C

A \ G-C-E
Ab \ Gb-B-Eb
G \ F-Bb-D

What I learned is that, you can transpose your right hand diatonically and still play the same bass. Here are the different variations....

1. Right hand playing down, chromatically, from Dmin.

A \ A-D-F
Ab \ Ab-Db-E
G \ G-C-Eb

2. Right hand playing down, chromatically, from Emin.

A \ B-E-G
Ab \ Bb-Eb-Gb
G \ A-D-F

3. Right hand playing down, chromatically, from FMaj.

A \ C-F-A
Ab \ B-E-Ab
G \ Bb-Eb-G

4. Right hand playing down, chromatically, from GMaj.

A \ D-G-B
Ab \ Db-Gb-Bb
G \ C-F-A

5. Right hand playing down, chromatically, from Amin.

A \ E-A-C
Ab \ Eb-Ab-B
G \ D-G-Bb

6. Right hand playing down, chromatically, from Bdim.

A \ F-B-D
Ab \ E-Bb-Db
G \ Eb-A-C

Here are all seven....

The Dorian (built off the second) and Locrian (built of the seventh) versions sound a little off, but as you can see you can fit them in with the right transition chord.

Tell me what you guys think, and for those that already use these variations, post your versions.

I just practiced this some more and found new variations, by moving the left hand chord in steps of different intervals (chromatic, whole step, diminished, major3rd). I like the diminished and whole step versions the best out of these. Try those also and tell me what you think.

Example, please.

....For instance, you can move the right hand chord in major3rd and minor3rd intervals....

Major3rd

A \ G-C-E
Ab \ B-E-Ab
G \ Eb-Ab-C, F-A-Bb-D

Minor3rd (diminished)

A \ G-C-E, Bb-Eb-G
Ab \ Db-Gb-Bb, E-A-Db
G \ F-A-Bb-D

This is almost limitless. I found about 15 different variations yesterday, just playing around using different intervals. I'm sure, once I play around with it some more, I'll find a lot more. Mainly, you just have to end up on the right chord, you can do almost anything. In these two examples, I end up with a BbMaj7 in my right hand.
